May is a month to honor the mothers and mother figures in our lives. It’s also a wonderful time to thank others, such as good friends, teachers, classroom assistants, and anyone who makes a difference in our lives. What better way to do that than with a thoughtful card? Kids will enjoy creating a handmade card for their mother, aunt, grandmother, friend, teacher, or any other important person in their life.
Materials Needed:
· colorful 8-inch by 11-inch construction paper
· pencils
· scissors
· coloring supplies
Step 1: Create the Card
Start by having students fold their piece of paper in half. Then have them place one of their hands on the paper so that their thumb and index finger are touching the folded part of the paper. Preferably this will be their non-dominant hand.
Instruct students to trace their hand using a pencil. You may want to assign partners to help each other with the task of tracing.
Step 2: Cut the Card
Using scissors, cut out the handprint. Keep the paper folded while cutting. Also, make sure the thumb and index fingers stay connected by the folded part of the paper.
After cutting, you will have a perfect handprint card. When you open it up, you will see a cute heart shape in the middle!
Step 3: Decorate the Front
Make sure to orient the card so that the fold is on the left and the fingers are facing down—this will ensure you will see the sweet little heart when you open the card up.
Write a short message on the front of the card, such as “You are Appreciated!” or “You’re the Best!” You can even have students brainstorm ideas for the front of the card and display them for all kids to see. Use markers to decorate the outside of the card.
Step 4: Write a Thoughtful Note
Open up the card and write a note on the inside. This is a great opportunity to discuss the parts of a letter.
Guide students to write the date on the upper right-hand side. Then start the letter with “Dear _______,” and write a kind note underneath. Finish the note with “Love, _____” or “Sincerely, _______”.
Step 5: Hand Deliver your Card
Encourage your students to give their cards to their special person. This is sure to be a meaningful keepsake for years to come!
